"Pro-Life" Is Pro-Baby AND Pro-Mom
Page updated March 2008

Are you pregnant, scared, not sure what to do?  In this day and age, everyone is well aware of the "abortion option".  Abortion seems like a quick, easy, "safe" solution to an unwanted or crisis pregnancy.  But it's a drastic solution.  In the immediate term, it's of course fatal to the unborn baby.  But what is often not considered are its potential long-term consequences to the mother.

Before you go ahead with an abortion, you should know all the facts.  It is not natural to suddenly snuff out a healthy, viable pregnancy.  It interrupts the natural rhythm of new life, the hormonal flow.  Breasts that had been swelling and adding new cells in anticipation of nursing the newborn, are suddenly without those hormonal signals.  What will happen with all those new, unused cells?  Some researchers theorize that they may be vulnerable to future cancerous mutuations.  And the womb that is scraped or vacuumed clean of the baby, placenta and amnion is vulnerable to postabortion infection, or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).  PID causes scar tissue that can lead to infertility.  The woman who so strongly did not want a child in her teens or early twenties may badly want to bear one in her thirties, and not be able to because her previous abortion(s) made her sterile.

The so-called "abortion pill" RU-486 carries with it its own risks, including hemorrhage, infection, and rarely, septic shock, which can be deadly.  Abortion, surgical or by pill, also does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases (some of which can themselves lead to infertility), and it poses a risk for post-abortion depression and other emotional harm to the mother.

Pregnancy is a glorious state that should be welcomed, not snuffed out.  It is a health- enhancing, life-enhancing, life-affirming experience.  In contrast, abortion is bad not only for mother's health but also for baby's.  Often, infants who survive attempted abortions have not escaped harm;  they may be born with limbs missing or other physical problems.  This fact, however, should not be taken as an excuse to go ahead and finish what the abortion started.  Children who survive abortion can and do go on to lead productive lives;  see the book Gianna listed below.

"Safe and legal" surgical abortions involve the unthinkable, the barbaric.  The smallest babies - to about 12 weeks or so - are dismembered by vacuum extractor or curette.  Second-trimester babies are aborted by saline solution, which literally burns them alive.  Older preborns are delivered to the neck in an induced labor, only to have their brains sucked out in the procedure known as partial birth abortion.  Meanwhile, mothers - some still in their teens - have been known to suffer hemorrhaging and even death as the direct result of "safe", legal surgical abortions.  And all this at the hands of an industry that remains largely unregulated nationwide.

If you don't think you can raise your baby, there is adoption - open or anonymous.  Or if you want to raise your baby but need help getting off to a good start, there are organizations that can put you in touch with group homes, or private homes, that will take in pregnant moms and help them thru pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

Sending heartfelt (((hugs))) to my sister survivors who have lost babies...
