Bible Verses for Postpartum Depression
Beautiful scriptures for meditation and prayer...
May these help bring healing to your heart and soul.
All scripture quotes are from the
King James Version of the Bible.
Psalm 61:1-4 Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer. From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy. I will abide in thy tabernacle forever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings.
Psalm 40:1-3 I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.
Psalm 30:2, 11-12 O LORD my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me. Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing; thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness; To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto thee forever.
Psalm 147:3 He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.
Isaiah 40:31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Isaiah 41:10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
Isaiah 43:2 When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.
Isaiah 51:11 Therefore the redeemed of the LORD shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away.
Isaiah 61:3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.
John 14:18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
Romans 8:38-39 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
II Corinthians 1:3-4 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
Phillippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

See also the lyrics to the following songs by Fernando Ortega: Lord of Eternity
and Jesus, King of Angels
(excerpt). These may be found on Ortega's beautiful album, The Breaking of the Dawn.
Another powerful song that has ministered to me is Drowning Man
by U2, which is on their War album.
These songs convey a strong sense of hope and faith in the midst of suffering. The singers/songwriters can relate to those who
suffer grief or depression, because they've survived it themselves. Much the same can be seen in many of the Psalms of David.
These often begin with expressions of grief and travailing before the Lord, yet end on a peaceful or triumphant note,
recollecting God's provision in times past, or praise for the way God sustains and rescues in times of trouble, grief and despair.
I remember when I was in the midst of PPD, how I didn't even think to pray or pick up my Bible. If that has happened to me, I'm sure other moms have gone through the same thing. Here is where husbands can really minister to their depressed wives, by praying with and for them, and reading these and other scriptures to them. Ephesians 5:25-26 says, "Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word". Another great verse is Galatians 6:2, "Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." The Greek for burdens in that verse is baros, which, according to Dake, means burden, grief, misery and pressure. When a husband comes alongside his wife, comforts her, prays with her, learns what her needs are and does what he can to meet them, he is helping to bear her burden, to walk with her through her suffering. By lovingly standing by her "in sickness and in health", he is following the Lord's example (Ephesians 5:25, Hebrews 13:5 - "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.")
Prayer and scripture study can be vital elements in your personal treatment plan for postpartum depression, as can the caring support of friends and loved ones, and especially of other moms who've already gone through PPD. For other helpful measures, see my main Postpartum Depression page.
